About the Artist

Wassily Kandinsky was a pioneering force in abstract art and a central figure in European modernism during the early twentieth century. His association with the Blue Rider group and later his influential teaching at the Bauhaus shaped his belief that art could evoke emotion through pure form and color, independent of direct representation.

When Kandinsky joined the Bauhaus in 1922, he embraced a more systematic approach to composition, exploring how geometric shapes and vibrant hues could convey inner resonance and balance. His Bauhaus years were marked by a focus on teaching, experimentation, and the search for a universal visual language.

The Artwork

Light Circle was created during Kandinsky's Bauhaus period, a time when he was deeply engaged with the school's ideals of harmony, design, and abstraction. Rather than narrating a specific story, the piece invites viewers to experience the expressive power of geometry. The circle, a recurring motif in Kandinsky's work, symbolized unity and the infinite, serving as a focal point for contemplation and visual exploration.

This artwork reflects the spirit of the early 1920s, when artists sought new ways to interpret a rapidly changing world through abstraction and innovative design principles. It stands as a testament to Kandinsky's pursuit of meaning beyond literal depiction.

Style & Characteristics

The composition centers on a luminous circle surrounded by intersecting geometric forms, creating a sense of movement and spatial depth. Sharp angles and crisp lines contrast with the softness of the central orb, producing a dynamic interplay between order and energy.

The palette features deep blacks, radiant yellows, reds, blues, and greens, all set against a dark background that intensifies the vibrancy of the colors. The overall effect is both cosmic and architectural, characteristic of Kandinsky's Bauhaus-era abstract style. Discover more in our abstract wall art and Bauhaus poster collection.
